Planned water supply maintenance for 15 to 18 April
The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas, which will result in water supply disruptions. The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused. This critical work is done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly. Read more below:
City-wide notice of maintenance work to be done by the National Department of Water and Sanitation
Residents across the city requested to reduce water consumption
The National Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will be doing pumping tests from the Berg River to the Riviersonderend Tunnel which supplies the Faure and Blackheath Water Treatment Plants (WTPs). During these tests, the supply to Faure and Blackheath will be reduced from Monday morning, 15 April 2024, until the evening of Tuesday, 16 April 2024. The City is topping up its reservoirs prior to the DWS shutdown.
DWS will fill its buffer dam, the Kleinplaas Dam, in advance to sustain the water supply to the Faure and Blackheath Water Treatment Plants,however at a reduced rate. Drinking water production from these two water treatment plants, which supply water to a large part of the city will be reduced to approximately half their daily output.
This may result in a temporary reduction of water pressure in some parts of the city.
Residents across Cape Town are kindly requested to reduce their water consumption to ensure the provision of a sustainable water supply during the shutdown period.
The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused, but it is imperative that DWS maintains its bulk water supply infrastructure to benefit its stakeholders.
Maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements will result in water supply disruption to these areas:
Khayelitsha – Dibana Street, Makhaza
The maintenance team will be doing a new connection to the existing local water supply network resulting in the disruption of the water supply to this area from 08:00 until 16:00 on Tuesday, 16 April 2024. A water tanker will be roaming in the area to provide water for domestic consumption during this period.
Victorskloof – Hout Bay
The Water and Sanitation Directorate will be installing a new HDPE water pipeline in Valley Road, from Martingale Avenue into Welbevind Way,from 09:00 until 17:00 on Wednesday, 17 April 2024. The water supply be shut off in Valley Road resulting in the water supply disruption to Victorskloof Road, Surcingle Avenue, Almond Close, Monterey Road, Valley Road and Welbevind Way as well as immediately surrounding roads.
Pinehurst
The Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing maintenance on the local water supply network in Pinehurst Drive, Skelton Close and Kennersley Road resulting in the disruption of the water supply to this area from 09:00 until 16:00 on Tuesday, 16 April 2024.
This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme which ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for water.

What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:
- Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
- All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
- Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.
- For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.

How residents are advised to prepare for planned water supply disruptions:
- Store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance for use during this period.
- Keep your taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.
