The City’s Environmental Management Department is making great progress with the construction of the new Bracken Nature Reserve multi-purpose centre in Brackenfell, which should be open to visitors mid-2025.
Read more below:
‘This multipurpose centre will accommodate up to 100 visitors and will mainly serve the community, young and old, as an environmental education centre, which will encourage residents to visit the reserve to enjoy the natural beauty right on their doorstep. Residents can look forward to visiting this beautiful facility next year and learn more about the reserve’s fascinating history,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
The City’s 36 hectare Bracken Nature Reserve protects critically endangered Swartland Granite Renosterveld and Cape Flats Sand Fynbos vegetation for example and therefore has plenty to show and teach visitors.
One of the special features of this centre is that it will include an outdoor classroom and will provide a viewing point over the reserve.
Furthermore the centre will include:
· A separate beautiful function venue available for environmental education and for hire
· Reserve staff offices, meeting rooms and accommodation
· Operations, storerooms and mess rooms for field staff
The centre will now also offer a new space for residents to enjoy the popular Spring Festival hosted at Bracken Nature Reserve each year.
Residents and scholars will benefit from various environmental education excursions and sessions at this facility and will learn about how the reserve supports a great diversity of wildlife.
Regularly sighted here are the Jackal Buzzard, Black-winged Kite, Peregrine Falcon, Southern Double-collared Sunbird and many more. Bracken Nature Reserve provides the opportunity for a number of outdoor activities including birdwatching, picnicking and walking.
