What Makes the Waterfront Duck Co. Special?

Their knowledgeable tour guides—affectionately known as “ConDUCKtors”—will entertain you with unique tales and fascinating facts about Cape Town's rich history and the amazing ecology of the area. The adventure begins with a land portion of the tour, departing from the Silo precinct and the V&A Waterfront. You’ll journey to the Atlantic Seaboard and the city, gaining a fresh perspective on Cape Town’s history. After returning to the Waterfront, the tour continues as you enter the water at the V&A Marina via a slipway. Along the way, you’ll pass luxury boats, the seal platform, and the aquarium, going under the Bascule and Swing Bridges and through both the Alfred and Victoria basins. There will be plenty of opportunities to view, take pictures, and soak it all in! Just a note: the tour stays within the confines of the harbour, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
Why Are They Called “Ducks”?
The term "Ducks" has an interesting origin! The original “Ducks” were built during World War II by The General Motors Corporation, with the model name DUKW. Troops quickly adopted the nickname 'Ducks,' and the name has stuck ever since! After the war, many of these amphibious vehicles were adapted for tourism and civilian use, especially in the United States. It’s important to note that these original WWII Ducks are now gradually being phased out of service worldwide. Today’s modern “Ducks,” like the one operated by the Waterfront Duck Co., are designed to meet contemporary safety, build, and comfort standards, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers.
