Twenty seven City libraries hosted in-house coding sessions on Mandela Day, and once the scores were in, two teams from Elsies River library made it to the top three. They will go up against top-performers from other libraries to determine who will advance to the national competition in October and then the World Tournament in December.

The in-house coding sessions attracted 438 participants across more than 30 teams who went head to head at 28 libraries.
At the end of the day, the overall top performing team was the Elsies River Tribal Chiefs, with the Belhar Rangers in second, and Team Yoh!, also from Elsies River, in third.
Unplugged coding requires minimal data, as the app is only 7MB in size, and teams can play TANKS or RANGERS offline, using the app and the tokens from the game packs.
The Mandela Day Coding tournament is played nationally with support from the Tangible Africa and Leva Foundation partners.

THE WAY FORWARD
The top three teams by geographical area from the Mandela Day competition will now move on to the next round, and the twelve teams will go head-to-head to determine the top three City teams who will be in the running to represent Cape Town in the national and World Tournament competitions.
Last year the final tournament drew participants from Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Germany and the United States of America and the three participating City libraries placed in the top 10.
