The City of Cape Town is committed to fostering economic inclusivity and growth, particularly in the informal economy which employs over 230 000 Capetonians. This year, we've invested R118,5 million in local economic development infrastructure to support informal traders, creating dignified, accessible, and business-friendly trading spaces city wide.

Key initiatives include transforming trading areas, with upgrades like asphalt surfacing, paver installations, bay demarcation, and adding gazebo hooks in Bothasig, Parklands, Monte Vista, Potsdam, Dunoon, Killarney, Durbanville, Blackheath, Kuils River, Philippi, Ottery, and Steenberg. These enhancements notably improve accessibility, operational efficiency, increases customer and trader experiences and the overall professional appearance of these trading spaces.
These upgrades extend beyond immediate benefits for traders; they attract new vendors and customers, invigorating local economic activities.
This financial year, we're concluding projects like the Mamre Business Hive upgrade and the construction of a container market in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, featuring offices that will provide support to traders, ablutions, parking, a food court, and a refuse area.
Multi-year projects set to conclude in 2025 and 2026 include the Traders Support Services Centre in Athlone and Gatesville and trading canopy structures in Kuils River, Somerset West, Strand, Watergate and Macassar. There are also upgrades of trading structures, kiosks, and hives in Gatesville, Khayelitsha, Macassar, and Philippi, upgrades at PTIs in Vuyani and Nyanga, timber structures, and seating walls in Simonstown, and market enhancements in Bo-Kaap, Mitchells Plain, Pelican Park, and Masiphumelele, including storage and ablution facilities.
Additionally, the City offers dedicated business training workshops to empower local entrepreneurs and enhance their business acumen. Through our workshops, we equip entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed.
