The City’s Urban Waste Management Directorate’s R51 million Festive Season Cleansing Programme is well under way, keeping Cape Town clean this summer. The programme is a top-up cleansing service supporting the City’s standard cleansing activities and has been operational from 1 October 2024. It will run until 30 April 2025.

In an effort to maintain a high standard of cleanliness over the tourist season, the City of Cape Town has once again initiated the Festive Season Cleansing Programme for the 2024/25 financial year.

This high-season programme is designed to ensure recreational areas are not degraded by litter and maintain the City’s image as an attractive tourist destination by providing extra services on all main arterial, transport routes, scenic routes, beaches, tourist hotspots, andcentral business districts. 

The programme activities include installing and servicing litter bins, sweeping streets and removal of illegally dumped material to landfill.Workers for the programme have been hired from the City’s Jobseeker database via a randomisation process.  

Teams will be working round the clock in staggered shifts, seven days a week, including public holidays for the duration of the programme.

‘Due to the influx of tourists and holiday makers visiting the city’s business and recreational areas, and the festive carefree atmosphere that descends at this time of year, litter levels can increase noticeably.

‘Recognising the importance of the City’s tourism sector, maintaining our recreational areas to a high standard is a key deliverable for the Urban Waste Management Directorate. This year, we will continue to strive towards the highest standards of cleanliness that the City of Cape Town has become synonymous with.

‘While the City’s teams are hard at work, the public are reminded that they also have an important role to play in keeping the City clean. Please dispose of litter in the public litter bins provided,’ said Alderman Twigg.
