‘This work forms part of the ongoing construction to alleviate traffic congestion in the Kommetjie area. The team will commence with the works during the course of this month, and the project will then be ongoing for the next 12 months. Our objective here is to improve the eastbound link capacity along Kommetjie Road as well as the intersections at Chasmay Road, Pokela Road and Lekkerwater Road,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas,
Construction will start with the relocation of the boundary wall and earth berms on the south bound for the first five months. Residents can expect to see the visible roadwork in November this year.
‘We ask that residents please cooperate with the staff on the ground over the next 12 months by staying clear of the Kommetjie Road reserve during this construction period. We will ensure that the work areas are clearly demarcated and that signage is in place,’ said Quintas.
The roadworks are planned for weekdays between 07:30 and 17:30 and Saturdays if required.
Further improvements to the road will include:
• The continuity of cycle lanes along Kommetjie Road and through major intersections to accommodate and encourage cycling as a viable mode of transport in the area during commuter peak periods.
• Public transport stops will be reinstated.
It is important for the informal traders who are usually located closest to the road in this vicinity to note that the project work will require the use of the entire road reserve and therefore their usual spots will be affected while construction is under way.
