‘It has been a relatively quiet week as many of our crime categories are showing a decrease. However, drunk driving arrests remain consistently high and it does not bode well for the end-of-the-month weekend ahead. Traffic officers arrested 47 suspects this past week of which 38 were taken in for drunk driving.
‘It is a cause for concern when more than 80% of the arrests are for one crime. Across the directorate, we are bracing for a busy weekend ahead as it’s a pay-day weekend. I want to urge our residents and visitors to take responsibility for their own safety whether they are on the road or partying at home,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Traffic officers also arrested two motorists for reckless and negligent driving, and seven for various other offences.
They impounded 137 public transport vehicles, executed 1 804 warrants of arrest, and recorded 45 177 offences.
Law Enforcement officers made 171 arrests for a number of violations, including the possession of drugs, ammunition and dangerous weapons.
It includes the arrest of two men yesterday in Voortrekker Road, Goodwood, who concealed 13 bankies of dagga in their clothing.
Their Metro Police counterparts arrested 82 suspects and confiscated a number of drugs including 191 mandrax tables, 61 packets of tik, cocaine, and khat.
On Wednesday, 19 June, officers were on patrol on Goven Mbeki Drive, Khayelitsha, when they spotted a man using a screwdriver and tampering with an electrical box.
The 41-year-old was arrested for damaging infrastructure and detained at Harare SAPS.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, 16 June officers arrested a 32-year-old suspect for possession of stolen property, illegal possession of drugs, and the possession of counterfeit money in Bellville.
Officers on patrol in Charl Malan Road apprehended a man who had tried to flee when he saw them.
When he was searched, the officers found R1 000 in counterfeit notes, R130 in real notes, 23 mandrax tablets and an iPhone which turned out to be stolen.
The suspect was arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS.
Public Emergency Communication Centre
The PECC recorded 1 201 calls this weekend of which there were 83 reports of assault and 22 domestic violence calls.
‘This has been a very quiet weekend, and a welcome reprieve for emergency services. We do have another payday weekend ahead, however. I want to challenge our residents to do something extraordinary next weekend and help us turn the pay-day tide of violence and crime. Our officers will be on the road to ensure it’s as safe as possible and we need everyone else to do their part,’ said Alderman Smith.
Residents are reminded to report any criminal activity or emergency by contacting the PECC on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline.
