This project forms part of the City’s Mayoral Priority Programme (MPP), which has earmarked R589,5 million for maintenance and pipe replacements across Cape Town in the 2025/2026 financial year, ensuring long-term reliability of the sewer network.

The Century City project, which saw the rehabilitation of almost 2 000m of sewer pipeline, started in July 2025 and was completed at the end of October 2025. It focused on renewing sewer pipelines along several key streets, including Century Avenue, Century Boulevard, Edison Way and Boundary Road.

The renewal works were prioritised as the 25-year-old sewer pipes experienced the following:

• Collapses along Century Boulevard, requiring emergency repairs
• Corrosion between Mercantile and Bridge roads
• Failing sewers at the sporting courts resulting in open excavations on Century Avenue and that would have disrupted traffic

The renewal of these critical sewer pipelines were first carried out via six open-trench emergency repairs to address immediate issues, followed by a renewal method known as cured-in-place pipe (CIPP). Work was carried out in two phases:

• Phase 1: Century Boulevard, next to Canal Walk Shopping Centre
• Phase 2: Century Avenue, near the Porsche dealership off Bosmansdam Road

CIPP involves inserting a specially designed liner into the existing pipe, which is then cured in place to form a new, durable inner pipe. This ‘pipe within a pipe’ method restores the sewer to near-new condition and extends its useful life.

‘With the area’s growing population and activity, this sewer renewal was essential to ensure sewage is carried safely and reliably for years to come. We thank residents, businesses, and visitors for their patience during this important work,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

• Extends the life of the sewer infrastructure for decades
• Provides a smooth, jointless inner surface, reducing leaks and blockages
• Minimises environmental impact with only small access points
• Reduces soil disturbance, protecting gardens, trees and structures
• Enables quicker pipe renewal, limiting disruption to residents and traffic
