In celebration of International Coastal Clean-up Day on 21 September, the City's Junior City Council, in collaboration with the City’s anti-litter mascot Bingo, took to Muizenberg Beach to participate in a successful beach clean-up. The event, which forms part of the City's broader #SpringCleanCT initiative, aimed to promote environmental responsibility and tackle coastal pollution
In line with the global effort spearheaded by Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Clean-up (ICC), the City’s Junior City Councillors removed litter and debris from the shoreline, contributing to the larger vision of protecting Cape Town’s beaches and marine life. This year’s clean-up at Muizenberg Beach was aimed at raising awareness around the efforts young people can make to ensure cleaner beaches. One of the highlights of the event was the presence of Bingo, the City of Cape Town’s anti-litter mascot. Launched as part of the City’s latest drive to encourage residents to ‘Bin it in the Bingo Bin,’ the mascot’s appearance added an element of fun and engagement, especially among the younger participants.
Custodian for the Junior City Council, Councillor Donovan Nelson, praised the efforts of the Junior City Council: ‘Our young leaders have shown tremendous initiative today. Events like this are a testament to how committed the City is in working with communities to protect our environment. It’s encouraging to see the Junior City Councillors leading by example and inspiring others to take responsibility for their surroundings.’
The beach clean-up is part of the Junior City Council’s ongoing environmental campaigns aimed at creating a more sustainable and litter-free Cape Town. In addition to physical clean-ups, these initiatives focus on educating the public about the importance of proper waste disposal, reducing plastic usage, and preserving the natural beauty of our beaches.
The City of Cape Town encourages all residents to join the effort by participating in clean-up events, using the appropriate waste bins, and being mindful of their environmental impact.
