Designed to promote sport and recreation within the Factreton community and surrounding areas, the event encouraged residents to sign up, learn and get active.
Stakeholders, including the KenFac Table Tennis and Walking Football groups and the Recreation and Parks Department (Sub Area 1,3 team), showcased exhibition matches and provided information about the wide range of recreation programmes available for all ages. Approximately 50 participants, ranging in age from 13 to 60+ years, attended the event.
Funding for the programmes was provided through ward allocation and departmental funding for equipment.
The table tennis programme, hosted at Factreton Community Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays from 18:30 to 20:00, involves both youth and adults.
Recreation staff run the table tennis programme during afterschool and holiday programmes, conducting internal social matches, tournaments and free sports play.
The walking football programme, hosted at Kensington Civic Centre on Wednesdays from 18:00 to 20:30, has since become self-sustainable, with the community taking full ownership and facilitation of the programme.
‘I help coach underprivileged youth and teach them new skills. They started off playing socially, but we were able to connect with various stakeholders, allowing them the opportunity to compete in the Western Cape Table Tennis Association tournaments. Youth development involves more than just the sport component. We also ensure that their schoolwork is in order to help them balance everything,‘ said Jason Albertyn representing KenFac Table Tennis.
‘We are delighted to support this recreation community exhibition, which highlights the efforts of the City’s Recreation and Parks Department and local stakeholders in promoting healthy and active lifestyles. Events like these are essential for building strong, connected communities and promoting sustainable programmes on offer to communities,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member forCommunity Service and Health, Councillor Van der Ross.
