The Recreation and Parks Department is in the midst of a multi-year project that will inject an estimated R28 million into the upgrade of the Bishop Lavis Sports Ground. This project aims to enhance recreational access, encourage an active lifestyle and establish a central hub for the Bishop Lavis community.
The design concept for the upgraded facility focuses on increasing its functionality and appeal to various user groups.
Improvements that have already been completed include an upgraded cricket pitch, a regrassed athletics track, new multipurpose hard courts for tennis and netball and new spectator fencing.
These renovations are further enhanced by essential infrastructure additions, such as stormwater catchpits.
In addition to the above, the central green core, created by consolidating soccer and cricket fields, further enhances the facility's accessibility and versatility.
‘The Bishop Lavis Sports Ground is a beautiful facility and we are glad to see the improvements made thus far. This community-focused investment underscores our commitment to providing safe, accessible and quality recreational facilities. The state-of-the-art upgrades create an inviting environment for families and athletes and will promote community well-being and pride,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
This year’s planned upgrades will include improvements to the entrance, access road and parking areas as well as the creation of an 11-a-side synthetic soccer pitch and a family park.
These developments will attract a diverse range of users and provide family-friendly amenities.
Additionally, plans feature a pedestrian link connecting Lavistown train station to Bishop Lavis Town Centre, as outlined in the Bishop Lavis Urban Node Upgrade Public Investment Framework (PIF).
‘These improvements will significantly enhance safety, accessibility and functionality, making the facility a welcoming space for local residents to get together and participate in sport and enjoy the outdoors,’ said ward councillor, Charles Esau.
