The City’s Recreation and Parks Department is excited to announce the upcoming public participation process for the Strandfontein Pavilion upgrade, with an open day scheduled for 26 October 2024. This initiative aims to drive interest in the project and encourage community engagement regarding the future of the Strandfontein node.
The Strandfontein Pavilion was originally constructed in the 1980s as a day resort.
The pavilion features a unique 300-meter-long windbreak promenade designed to mitigate the harsh south-easterly winds, enhancing the civic scale of the area.
Despite its historical significance and coastal recreation value, the pavilion has suffered from ageing infrastructure and declining conditions, with parts recently condemned by the City’s Building Inspector.
The surrounding area has been shaped by dynamic coastal processes, including storm wave surges and wind-blown sand, which present both challenges and opportunities for revitalisation. These natural elements have highlighted the need for improvements to enhance the area's appeal as a vibrant coastal destination.
This multi-faceted upgrade aims to:
· Significantly refurbish the pavilion and its associated coastal amenities.
· Improve the quality and capacity of existing facilities.
· Promote facility clustering, multi-functionality and sharing to reduce operational costs.
· Enhance underutilised land for appropriate development.
The project is part of the Strandfontein Coastal Urban Node Development Framework, focusing on strategic investment, inter-departmental collaboration and improved service offerings. Key objectives include refurbishing and upgrading ageing infrastructure, ensuring accessibility for all, enhancing safety and security and balancing development with biodiversity through thoughtful design.
The project timeline overview includes the completion of the concept design phase and the public participation process currently underway, running from 4 October to 4 November 2024. An open day is scheduled for 26 October, providing an opportunity for community members to engage directly with the project team and share their insights. Following this process, consultants will be appointed to further develop the design, incorporating community feedback into the next stages. Project implementation is anticipated to begin in 2026.
