‘A significant benefit of hosting a career expo is that it exposes mainly high school learners to different career paths. They may not be aware of some of these career options available to them and an expo can help them discover new fields they may be interested in pursuing.
‘By connecting them with industry professionals, they get a closer look at career options that they might not have thought about, and get first-hand information about what is required in the real world. There are so many options and paths available, and a career expo can help provide clear guidance to attendees,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
Last year 1 923 people, the majority of them high school learners, attended 13 expos.
Already this year 2 443 people attended eight career expos at City libraries and more of these events are being planned for the rest of the year.
The Kuyasa, Harare, Masakhane, Nazeema Isaacs and Kulani libraries collaborated with 12 City departments and stakeholders for their combined expo in April and recorded nearly 1 000 attendees.
The Mitchells Plain Town Centre Library recorded 750 attendees in March, with Durbanville boasting 302 in May and Southfield 200 in February.
‘Career expos can play an important part in planning your career and your future. Our librarians go to great lengths to ensure there are as many industries, institutions, organisations and professionals available at the events. I want to encourage our learners to attend the expos when they are hosted at their local libraries,’ added Councillor Van der Ross.
Check with your local library for future career expos.
