The City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre had a slightly easier weekend of it, compared to the previous payday weekend, with a downturn in calls, and a significant drop in some of the most troublesome categories.

The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 661 incidents over the past weekend.
Not only was it a 10% drop compared to the previous weekend, but also significantly quiet compared to the April payday weekend.
Emergency operators dispatched assistance to 34 fires, 120 assault cases, 191 noise nuisance complaints, 31 domestic violence incidents and 62 road accidents.
The statistics were higher across the board in April, most notably 187 cases of assault, 272 noise complaints and 48 domestic violence incidents.
‘It’s common cause that the payday periods tend to be synonymous with increases in interpersonal violence, road accidents and more, so we welcome any downturn in related statistics. The optimistic view would be that the message is finally getting through, but I am mindful that we have a public holiday coming up, and then the very end of the month weekend, which is not the salticrax variety. As things stand, we can also expect several days of rainfall later this week, that will likely add another layer of complications for our enforcement and emergency services. My appeal to the public is to keep their wits about them, and to take it easy, both on the roads, and with the bottle,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
On the roads, traffic officers issued 56 730 fines, impounded 185 public transport vehicles and executed 1 736 warrants of arrest.
Officers also arrested 68 motorists – 56 for driving under the influence of alcohol, three for reckless and negligent driving and nine others for various transgressions, including possession of a stolen vehicle, false documentation and assault of an officer.
Law Enforcement officers conducted 618 enforcement operations in the past week, made 183 arrests and issued 4 420 notices for various offences.
Metro Police officers made 73 arrests and issued 3 484 traffic and by-law fines.
